Luxury label Gucci has joined a pilot program with startup Xpondr to protect high-value shipments crossing the world’s oceans.

The company is testing ANTS — an integrated security platform that combines active RFID, GPS and satellite uplinks to monitor sealed cargo containers.

Xpondr’s president, Link Charlot, described the trial during the Maritime Security Expo in New York, saying manufacturers and government agencies are watching the project closely.

The goal is to detect tampering, theft, intellectual property pilfering and even the risk of smuggling or stowaways before containers reach their destinations.

Gucci’s interest is practical: ensuring seasonal designs and accessories cannot be removed or replicated while garments move between ships and foreign ports.

ANTS places battery-powered RFID transponders inside containers and pairs them with GPS receivers and additional environmental sensors — for temperature, radiation and chemical hazards when required.

Rather than each tag speaking only to a satellite, Xpondr’s tags form a peer network, sharing data among themselves until one tag is in view of a low-earth-orbit satellite to relay the group’s status.

This peer-to-peer approach is designed to overcome signal blockages that commonly occur in crowded ports and warehouse spaces.

Once uplinked via Echostar’s LEO constellation, container telemetry is forwarded to a secure web portal accessible to authorized shippers, carriers and customs officials.

Active RFID’s on-board battery enables longer-range two-way communications compared with passive tags, which rely on nearby readers for power.

Xpondr argues that using reusable active tags and satellite service keeps overall costs manageable for commercial deployments.

Charlot acknowledged that large firms such as IBM, GE, Maersk and RFID specialist Savi have pursued similar container-monitoring concepts.

Still, Xpondr claims ANTS’ particular mix of sensors, tag networking and satellite connectivity will address gaps where prior efforts fell short.

Beyond anti-theft and IP protection, the system helps customers locate late or missing shipments as they transit multiple carriers and ports around the globe.

Early applications have included military logistics and vehicle tracking; the current pilots aim to prove the approach at scale for luxury retail and other sensitive supply chains.
