LOS ANGELES There's no question about the status of Alex Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft. At 37, he is happily retired as NFL quarterback and doing work for ESPN after spending a combined 14 seasons with San Francisco, Kansas City and Washington.As for Aaron Rodgers, the Packers QB who went No. 24 in that '05 draft, his future remains uncertain, whether he will be playing again in Green Bay, elsewhere or nowhere in 2022.MORE: When Sporting News talked with Smith during his coaching stint at the New Era youth football ProCamp during Super Bowl 56 week, he wasn't sure what Rodgers would choose to do this offseason but Jake Luton Jersey has empathy for his decision-making proce s."Only Aaron knows. He gave us a lot of insight when he accepted his MVP award. He was very honest in what he was contemplating. You play for this long, you sacrifice a lot for the game of football, especially in life off the field," Smith said. "You never think you're going to play 17 years. All of a sudden you look and he's 38 years old, and there are things he probably wanted to do that he's had to delay."While the Packers are uncertain to undergo a QB transition from Rodgers to third-year first-rounder Jordan Love, the 49ers Smith's original team are going through a change he knows well (twice).In 2011, the Niners used a Travis Homer Jersey high second-round pick on Colin Kaepernick, who displaced Smith as the starter a season later. In 2017, while playing the best football of his career with the Chiefs, he saw them trade up to draft Patrick Mahomes in the first round.This year, the 49ers are expected to trade Jimmy Garoppolo with second-year first-rounder Trey Lance ready to take over. Smith was impre sed by how his former organization managed to be so succe sful with a veteran looking over a rookie's shoulder."Jimmy is a really, really good player, took them to the NFC championship, on the doorstep of Jason Myers Jersey the Super Bowl, despite them obviously drafting his replacement. Trey Lance is a young kid, super talented and they handled it really well. "Seems like that if it didn't happen now, it never would happen. But you never say never, especially with Jim."Smith's final NFL team, Washington, was still nicknamed the Redskins when he joined them in 2018. It became the Football Team for his last season in 2020. He's still wrapping his head around the "Commanders," what it will be called in '22 and beyond."It's still pretty new on me, like everybody," Smith said. "'Washington Football Team' was a great name I loved it but it was time to go with something. We got used to hosting Super Bowls down there and it's kind of sad to see them leave," Smith said. "It's nice to see the Super Bowl back in Southern California."Smith was one of three former NFL stars coaching the camp involving 200 youths from area football teams, along with former Panthers tight end Greg Olsen and Hall of Fame Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson. They were joined by Heisman Trophy-winning current Alabama QB Bryce Young, another Southern Californian."It's amazing to partner with New Era, an awesome company, and give back to the community.
