One of the craziest parts of the NHL season is quickly approaching. The 2023 trade deadline is at the end of this week. Contenders are looking for rentals to go on a deep playoff run, while bottom dwellers are aiming to get picks and prospects for players that won't be returning to the game next fall. We've already had a number of major trades in advance of deadline week. was traded nearly a month ago from the Canucks to the Islanders, while the Blues traded to the Rangers and to the Maple Leafs. The Bruins acquired defenseman from the Capitals last week. While some players have already been moved, there are still a number of candidates available on the trade block. While there is a specific deadline for trades, teams can still acquire players from other clubs after March 3.The caveat is that any player traded after the deadline is not eligible to play in any regular season or playoff games for their new teams. The easiest way to find potential trade deadline targets is by looking at pending free agents on teams that likely won't be in the playoffs. If their clubs know they are not going to re-sign the player, then they will ship them out and get back players, prospects, and/or draft picks in return. Here are some of this year's top trade deadline targets still available: Patrick Kane, F, Blackhawks Kane is in the final year of his ma sive eight-year, $84 million contract and a pending UFA in the summer. With the Blackhawks in full rebuild mode, a trade to move Kane out of Chicago has been discu sed for nearly a year now. While Kane is having a down year by his standards (16 goals and 45 points in 54 games), he's still one of the league's best puck handlers and pa sers. With a full no-trade clause, it is going to come down to if Kane wants to be traded and where he wants to go. Timo Meier, F, Sharks Meier's future does not appear as though it is in the Bay area. The Swi s winger is set to be a restricted free agent and is likely going to be moved with him and the Sharks not coming to an agreement on a contract extension. Meier is due a $10 million qualifying offer by whatever team owns his rights. The 26-year-old has 52 points in 57 games as he is on pace to break his previous career-high in goals (35). Jakob Chychrun, D, Coyotes Chychrun was one of the top candidates to be moved at the 2022 deadline, but the Coyotes felt they did not get a suitable enough offer. The 24-year-old defenseman has two years left with a very team-friendly $4.6 million cap hit, making him an appealing option around the league.
